India police arrest 3 Nigerians over fraud

Three Nigerians living in India were arrested at the weekend for various offences, with two of them remanded in prison after being charged with fraud. One of them identified as Eistabot was arrested Saturday for beating up a cab driver over the fare in Greater Noida in Utta Pradesh. The Nigerian is a B Tech student at a private engineering college in the area. Two other Nigerians were arrested by a joint team of Delhi and Goa Police for cheating several people after befriending them on social networking sites. The duo — Chukwuma Collins, 35, and Nicodemus Obinna, 27 — used to befriend people on Facebook and then ask for money to send “necessary items” to their family members in UK, according to a report by The Times of India Police said that the men used to fabricate stories about the poor conditions of their family members living in western countries and ask the victims to help them with money. After receiving the money they broke all contact with the victims. Goa Police had received a complaint from a woman, Bridget Fernandes Rai, who claimed to have been cheated of around Rs 8 lakh, about $12,000, by the duo. She said that she had befriended Collins on Facebook and after a few days of chatting he started calling her. Rai told the police that Collins started referring to her as his sister and asked for Rs 8 lakh to transfer some money and jewellery through a courier to his relatives. He claimed that the courier was stuck in legal processes at the customs department in Goa and he needed to get it delivered quickly as his wife had expired. Rai agreed to transfer the money to his account. As soon as the money was transferred, Collins “disappeared”, Rai alleged. “A team from Goa Police approached us in Delhi after a technical surveillance pointed to role of some people operating from here. A joint team was formed to track the accused. The duo was arrested from Mahavir Enclave in south Delhi,” said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner, crime. Collins and Obinna have confessed to their crime and disclosed that they had cheated several others in a similar way. Three laptops, data cards, 36 SIM cards and 26 mobile phones were recovered from them, said The Times. During interrogation, the duo claimed that they had arrived in India five years ago for business and then started cheating people using different techniques. The accused were produced in a Dwarka court and taken on a transit remand by Goa Police.

Anglican bishops flee Anambra over IPOB’s threat.

The five-day meeting of the bishops of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) taking place in Awka, Anambra State ended abruptly on Wednesday.
This, our correspondent gathered, was as a result of the fear that the 170 bishops attending the meeting could be trapped because of the sit-at-home protest declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra to hold on September 23.
The conference was scheduled to end on Friday.

The Primate of the Anglican Communion, Most Revd. Nicolas Okoh, had earlier in the conference expressed fear that the bishops could be trapped in the state should their meeting go on as scheduled.
He had asked the state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, to prevail on IPOB members to shelve their Friday protest so that the bishops’ conference could go on.
He said the IPOB sit-at-home protest would hamper their activities and movement.
Okoh implored the pro-Biafran agitators to postpone their action until after the end of the bishops’ conference.

IPOB had threatened that markets, banks and other institutions would  be shut down on Friday, while movement would be restricted in the  South-East geopolitical zone and beyond as a protest  against the continued detention of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, by the Federal Government.
“We are not against whatever their agitations are, but we ask them to wait until we leave Awka on Friday.
“If they go on to carry out that protest, we may be trapped in Anambra as the Niger Bridge is the only exit from Anambra State.
“So, help us beg them to allow us to go,” the Primate enjoined Obiano.
A delegate who would not want to be named told our correspondent that, “there was no assurance that we were protected. We are human, so we had to put our heads together and decided to cut short the conference.
“That’s the most ideal thing to do in the circumstance.
“I will leave this evening (Wednesday) and most others will do same. Those who can’t make it today will do so early tomorrow (Thursday). There is no need waiting, it doesn’t make sense.”

Meanwhile, the Anglican bishops had in the summit appealed to the Niger Delta militants to stop the bombing of oil facilities in their region in the interest of the country.
This was even as they appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to convene a roundtable meeting with the agitators in order to address their grievances.
The clerics reminded the militants that shutting down the economy of the country would not do anybody any good.
Delivering his address at the conference held at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith, Awka, Okoh appealed to the Federal Government to disarm the Fulani herdsmen who he said had murdered the peace of the country.
The address partly read, “The Standing Committee wishes to make a passionate appeal to the militants to spare our economy and stop the bombing of oil facilities.
“Shutting down the economy is like pulling down the roofs with all of us inside; nobody will escape the negative impact. We equally call on those who can reach them to join in this appeal for the greater good of all.

“The presence of herdsmen in our countryside is not new, they have always been around. What is, however, new are the unprovoked attacks on their host communities sometimes justified by saying that a cow is missing.
“They lay ambush and waylay people going to their farms, rape women and destroy farmlands; and their victims are at their mercy because they are armed.
“We call on the Federal Government to immediately disarm these people in order to return peace to Nigeria.”

Troops battle Boko Haram near Malam Fatori

Fierce clashes have been reported and claims of casualties as Nigeria's military backed up by a multinational force battled Boko Haram fighters for control of a town in the country's northeast.
The fighting on Tuesday and Wednesday around the town of Malam Fatori in Borno state, near the border with Niger and Chad, was the latest in the area which has changed hands many times in Boko Haram's seven-year armed campaign that has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced more than two million in Nigeria.
Nigerian army spokesman Sani Kukasheka Usman said government and troops from the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) captured Malam Fatori on Tuesday and killed several Boko Haram members.
But, Boko Haram fighters regrouped and counterattacked, according to the Associated Press news agency. On Wednesday, Reuters news agency quoted Usman, the Nigerian army's spokesman, as saying the "operation is continuing".
Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, reporting from the capital Abuja, said government troops had ousted the armed group's fighters from areas around Mallam Fatori on Tuesday, but then retreated when Boko Haram regrouped with reinforcements and mounted new attacks.
"Although there is so much propaganda on both sides, the army came clean this time around saying that it has lost its position before and it has withdrawn tactically to vantage positions to try to take back the town," Idris said. "Meanwhile, fighting is ongoing in that particular area," he added.
Boko Haram also claimed to have killed 40 troops involved in the operation, our correspondent said.

Amaq, a site affiliated to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), said that its fighters had attacked an army convoy in the Malam Fatori area on Monday killing 40 troops, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors the group's announcements.
Boko Haram pledged loyalty to ISIL last year.
The armed group controlled a swath of land in northeast Nigeria around the size of Belgium in the early part of last year, but has been pushed out of most of that territory by the Nigerian army, aided by MNJTF troops from neighbouring Cameroon, Niger and Chad.
Boko Haram have nevertheless continued to carry out suicide bombings in the northeast and in neighbouring countries.
The UN Children's Fund estimated in a recent report on Boko Haram violence that 475,000 children across the Lake Chad region - which borders Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger - will suffer from acute malnutrition this year.
An estimated 38 children have been used to carry out suicide attacks in the Lake Chad basin so far this year, bringing to 86 the total number of children used in suicide attacks since 2014, the report said.

In the midst of others loss, some see it as gain. Irony of life

This trailer fully loaded with cement got stuck in a muddy lonely bad road and fell. Before morning, the rural dwellers had packed all the cement for their home use. Essence of bad road. They had claimed they used the bags containing cement to fill pot holes. While the government sits and watch, some are enjoying life through others losses.
